What Does Chiropractic Treatment Involve?
Chiropractors assess the spine to identify misalignments that may cause joint or nerve dysfunction. The most common treatment is the chiropractic adjustment—a precise, hands-on technique used to restore movement in areas that are restricted or not functioning optimally.
In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractors may incorporate other methods such as therapeutic exercises, massage, heat and cold therapies, acupuncture, ultrasound, and tailored advice on posture, walking patterns, and lifestyle. Many patients are given personalised exercises and stretches to perform at home, which are a key part of the recovery process and help support long-term results.

Who Can Benefit From Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic treatment is suitable for a wide range of people—including infants, older adults, and pregnant women. Each treatment is carefully adapted to suit the individual person. You do not need a referral from your GP to see a chiropractor.

What Happens at Your First Appointment?
During your initial consultation, your chiropractor will begin by taking a detailed history of your current issue as well as your general medical background and lifestyle habits. This will be followed by a physical assessment that may include spinal and muscular evaluations, neurological checks, and orthopaedic tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Once a diagnosis is made, you’ll receive a clear explanation of what’s causing your discomfort and a recommended treatment plan. This will include how many sessions you may need, the techniques likely to be used, and the expected duration of care.

This appointment typically takes up to 45 minutes. Most people will receive treatment during their first visit. If, however, chiropractic care isn’t appropriate or further investigations such as scans are needed, treatment may be postponed or you’ll be referred to the appropriate specialist.

How many treatments will I need?
The length of treatment varies depending on the condition’s severity and how long it's been present. This will be discussed during your first appointment. As a general guide, new injuries often require around 6 sessions over 2 to 3 weeks. Your care plan will be customised to suit your condition. If followed properly, many patients experience full relief of their symptoms. For chronic or recurring issues, maintenance care may be recommended to help manage long-term health.
